Business Desktop Deployment

How do you currently migrate your existing desktops to the latest Microsoft operating system, applications and user data? Do you try and postpone it for as long as possible as it takes too long and costs too much?

What is the BDD

One of the most comprehensive ways to redress the balance is via the Microsoft Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) Solution Accelerator. In short the BDD is a series of guides and templates on how to plan, build and deploy Windows based desktops, Microsoft Office and other core applications as well as migrate user settings with a set of Microsoft tools and technologies. Such tools include:

  • Microsoft Windows Pre Installation Environment (Windows PE)

  • Microsoft Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT)

  • Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT)

What does it include

The BDD solution includes a series of feature team guides that outline how to undertake the necessary work. There are seventeen guides, with the major ones outlined below:

  • Computer Imaging – operating system and core applications

  • User state migration – providing the ability to identify data files and settings on a users’ current desktop , save them and then restore to their new desktop

  • Application Compatibility – ensure existing applications will work when installed on the new desktop

  • Supplemental Application – rather than install a specific application manually and maybe differently each time, it is better to package an application and then it can be installed on a desktop without user intervention and guaranteed the same install each time

  • Infrastructure Remediation – guidelines on how to assess current hardware and identify hardware upgrade requirements and how to analyse the network for any constraints or limitations

  • Deployment – guidelines on how to streamline the planning and deployment steps

  • Core Applications – how to deploy Microsoft Office editions using such tools as the Office Resource Kit, as part of the base desktop image

  • Operations – prepares the operations staff for the pilot and future rollout across the organisation

  • Security – how to secure your data, identify vulnerabilities and ensure security measures are current

  • Provisioning – steps to enable users to self-subscribe to services and software

Embrionic and the BDD

Embrionic has taken the BDD a step further by enhancing the technologies used, reducing the time to ready the work as well as further customisation. This is based upon the wealth of experience we have derived from our own deployment mechanisms such as Embrionic directdeploy™ as well as many years experience in the automated desktop deployment (since Windows NT3.51) and application packaging arenas.

We will show you how to reduce the costs of such deployments and fast track your build and applications with the methods and techniques that will best fit your business.
